Torran Rocks

In 2022, it will be 150 years ago since the Dubh Artach’s lantern was lit. One of the reasons the lighthouse was built were the many shipwrecks in the area. During the winter of 1865-1866 no less than 24 vessels were driven aground. The Torran Rocks are one of multiple notorious reefs on the west coast of Scotland that have caused many tragedies. From the Knockvologan shore, the rocks are just about visible and apart from fishermen, not many come there. Fearsome! I have sailed between them and will not forget the leaping water! says Oliver Beardon, skipper from Sail Britain Residency.

The Torran Rocks speak to the imagination. In the coming year, we plan to explore the area as a prelude to the 2022 celebration of the lighthouse. How, we don’t know yet. Our tiny 2,5m inflatable rib is not suitable for expeditions that far out.
