Edges - recordings

The Ross of Mull, out on the edge, was home to many Gaelic poets, storytellers and song-writers over the years. Today a collective, Ross of Mull Poets, brings together eight to ten people, with very different backgrounds and styles. BC (Before Covid-19) they would meet to share work in progress and to enjoy reading aloud words from inspiring poets, and some of their own work. From time to time this blossomed into public performances in community halls or the pub.

Suddenly, during the lockdown, meetings and public events were out. But ROMP began taking turns in a daily exchange of writing. The poets sustained this commitment – and it sustained them – for ten weeks. Edges contains a selection of poems arisen from that time, with its intensity of feeling, moments of fantasy and earthy humour.

On the 14th of October, Shirley Blacoe, Derek Crook, Seth Crook, Alexandra James, Jan Sutch Pickard, Charley Streather, Brian Thomas and Miek Zwamborn launched Edges by reading and recording the poems on Fidden beach. This event was initiated, hosted and recorded by Knockvologan Studies. You can’t silence a poet!

Several ROMP poets are published in print and online. Together they self-published a pamphlet Poetree and collaborated on a CD Mullings, professionally recorded at An Tobar on Isle of Mull by Gordon MacLean.

The pamphlet comprises 23 poems. You can listen to 8 of them here.

A big thank you Shirley, Alexandra, Derek, Seth, Charley, Brian and Jan for your wonderful readings. It was a delight to see and hear you all. Oh and by the way, a few days later we received this unexpected bonus ‘track’. Enjoy!
