Rutger Emmelkamp is an interdisciplinary artist based in Mull with over 25 years of experience in the visual arts, working across experimental film and photography, installation, and collaborative, place-based practice. His artistic journey began at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the mid-90s, after which he studied Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, where he later taught Art and Design for eleven years before committing his full focus to KNOCKvologan Studio.

His practice is structured around three interconnected strands:
Studio: Making, experimental film, and analogue photography, developed as a form of materialised philosophy exploring co-evolution and interdependence between human and more-than-human systems.
KNOCKvologan projects and residency: Initiated and run with Miek, they support artistic research and international exchange from a rural, island context.
Conservation and island development: Chairing the Tireragan Trust’s conservation activities and co-chairing SWMID’s local island development organisation.
Rather than separate fields, these form one evolving inquiry, grounded in the environmental humanities, into how thought, material, and lived experience inform one another.

Rutger increasingly shares this thinking directly, through guided field tours, lectures, workshops, and Socratic Dialogue training for universities and organisations.
